Tripod: A three-legged supporting stand used to hold the camera steady. Especially useful when using slow shutter speeds and/or telephoto lenses. Tripods used for motion picture camera have three main parts: the head, the legs, and the spreader (triangle). The head is the main part of the tripod that actually holds the camera. The head allows the camera to both pan and tilt. The legs typically come in one of three sizes: standard, baby, or high-hat. The spreader is a device that keeps the tripod legs from doing the splits and thus having the camera go crashing to the ground. The spreader is best for use on hard, flat surfaces, but should be removed when the tripoc is used on soft or uneven surfaces such as grass or gravel.
